HOW TO GET TO THE SUGAR LOAF. MASTERING THE GUANABARA BAY.

The imposing stone advancing Sugar Loaf on the Guanabara Bay is the post card of Rio de Janeiro. The climb alone is a spectacle. The new cable cars with transparent sides, initiates the fantastic view that you will see from the top.

The Sugarloaf  is formed by two hills:

1- Morro da Urca with 744 ft tall, is the first stop of the cable car. It has shops, kiosks, snack bars and museum showing the history of the Air Path of Sugar Loaf,  you’ll see how the first cable cars  made the climb.

2 – Morro do Pão de Açúcar, with 1,299 feet tall, the second stop. The highest award: the stunning views of the city, whit its unique and beautiful topography, will captivate you.

The ride takes three minutes at each stage, and they leave  every 20 minutes  from the Praia Vermelha station. This interactive map, will show you what you will find on each stop. Mouse over the hills to find out.

  • TIP  Spare some extra time before or after the visit to the Loaf to walk around the neighborhood of Urca. On a clear day, the waterfront is beautiful and it can be complete with a cold beer and a snack at the famous Bar Urca.
  • If possible, avoid periods of peak season when the queues are huge and the wait time increases.
  • You can also buy tickets through the website so you can avoid long waits.
  • If you are over 60, do not forget to bring your identity card or passport, with photo, to gain 50% discount on the ticket.
  • If you like adventure, contact with nature and is fit, try climbing the Morro da Urca, walk. You will not regret. Trust me.
