STAIRCASE SELARÓN – A STORY OF LOVE TO RIO DE JANEIRO.

There are many stories of love amidst visitors and Rio de Janeiro . Several visitors ended up adopting the city and living here. One in special, was a Chilean who decided to mark his presence by creating an unforgetable work. The Selarón Staircase.

 A work of art , which is a declaration of love to Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.

No one better to describe the work than the author himself , the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón .

” This work of art begun in 1990 , as a great tribute to my Brazilian people , using the colors of Brazil ‘s flag, green – blue-yellow . “

He began recovering the staircase in front of the house he lived. There are 215 steps . The work became almost an obsession , and spread to the walls of the houses in the vicinity as well as their stairways.

He bought imported antique tiles , was given so many others that in the end, he had over 2000 different tiles of 46 countries worldwide.

Selarón Staircase - Lapa, Rio de JaneiroSince there was no room to add anything else , he decided to go around changing the tiles . The stairway has become a living work of art in it mutant stage .

“I will only end up this crazy and unheard of dream on the last day of my life. “

And so he did. In January 2013, the Chilean painter died at 65, on the steps in front of the house where he lived for over 30 years .

The staircase , tumbled by the city of Rio de Janeiro , is one of the most visited places by tourists worldwide.

WHERE IS IT AND HOW TO GET THERE?

It is in Lapa. On Manuel Carneiro street. It is one of the high points of the Santa Teresa neighborhood. The best way to get there is by Subway . The staircase is located about 600 meters from the Cinelandia station.

If you are close to a Metro station, go to the box office, buy your  round trip ticket, board the line 1 train  (the one with the red light on the side) get off at the Cinelândia station. To exit the platform , follow the signs to OUTPUT “D” – Passeio . Outside the station go straight ahead. See the route on the map.

Enter the Street which is next to the Sala Cecilia Meireles , the best Rio Concert Hall (See the site) . You’ll see the staircase down at the end of the street .

It is worth knowing the Arcos da Lapa , which are 0,22 mile away.

  1. He didn’t die! He was murdered. They put his head on fire in front of his house. The story of Selaron is completely told in his movie called “Selaron -The Movie” you can find it on YouTube.
